For obvious reasons, the first test of a nuclear weapon took place many miles from civilisation. The Trinity site is about 35 miles south–south–east of the nearest city, Socorro (estimated population in 2019: 8,348). Another 50 miles (approximately) south–south–east is the somewhat larger city of Alamogordo (31,384 in 2020), where there is also a US Air Force base.
